Abstract
1,149,988. Power plant; two-stroke engines. AMETEK Inc. Sept.6, 1967, No.40750/67. Headings F1B and F1Q. A power plant e.g. for model craft, comprises at least two single-cylinder I.C. engines (10, Fig.1 not shown) and 12, 14 Fig.2, mounted on a block 40, having separate crank-shafts driving a power shaft 16 and a single carburetter (18), which supplies mixture through a valve 92 to the individual crank-cases, mixture being injected into the engine cylinders by crank-case compression. Each engine is secured by a nut 60 which engages a screw-threaded crank-shaft sleeve 80. Driving gears 66, 50 are arranged so that the engines fire sequentially. Mixture is supplied from the carburetter via bore (30), groove 32 to the slots 94 which periodically register with ports 92. The reduced crank-case pressure draws mixture into the crank-case until port 92 is sealed against sleeve 80 and the mixture is then compressed and injected into cylinder 78 through transfer port 96. In another embodiment two engines 100, 102, Fig.3 mounted on a block 104 through which mixture is fed via a bore 124 into a transverse bore 126 which feeds the individual engines through bores 128. In a modification two twin engine assemblies similar to Fig. 3 are combined to form a four-cylinder engine Fig. 10 (not shown). In another embodiment four engines 221, Fig.9 driving a propeller 217 are arranged in oppositely disposed pairs with the cylinders of each pair abutting side-by-side, and the mixture enters each crank-case through a reed valve (not shown). In a further embodiment four cylinders are equi-angularly disposed about the axis of the power shaft.
