Abstract

1,149,011. Electro-plating with stainless steel. AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc. April 27, 1966 [May 19, 1965], No.18357/66. Heading C7B. To increase the corrosion resistance of electro-deposited stainless steel coatings of the kind produced by the process of Specification 914, 866, the electro-plating bath contains at least 0À3g/l of a soluble hydrazine (calculated as N 2 H 2 ). The soluble hydrazine may be hydrazine itself or its chloride, sulphate or oxalate salts, alkyl-, aryl- or mixed alkyl aryl-hydrazines or soluble derivatives thereof. The process, bath and brighteners and metal and other additives are substantially as in the prior Specification with the added feature of the optional further inclusion of citric acid as a brightener and with the use of a slightly different C.C.D. range of 10 to 35À5 amps/ sq.dm. As described, steel panels are solvent cleaned and electrolytically cleaned before electroplating from solutions containing per litre (calculated where appropriate as anhydrous salt) 200g chrome alum, 112 gm nickel sulphate, 35g ferrous chloride or sulphate, 25g boric acid, 180g urea, 15g citric acid, and 3g hydrazine. After plating the panels are passivated in an aqueous solution of chromic acid and sodium dichromate, rinsed in warm water and dried with compressed air.
