Abstract
1,146,747. Device for curling or waving hair. E. MANDERVELD. 28 July, 1966 [4 Aug., 1965; 25 March, 1966], No. 34040/66. Heading A4V. A device for maintaining the hair curled comprises a substantially spherical elastic compressible spool having a slot provided in the circumference in a diametric plane, thus effectively forming two cheeks separated by a central core around which the hair is wound in order to curl, wave or set it. In Fig. 1 a sphere of preferably a foam material, e.g. a polyurethane or a polyether, is provided with a circumferential slot 2; a circular groove 3 is provided close to the bottom 4 of the slot in each of the cheeks 5 of the spool, thus defining a cylindrical core 6, the axis of which passes through the centre of the sphere. In use, the cheeks 5 of hemispheres 7, 8 (Fig. 2) are opened, and a lock of hair is curled around core 6; the hemispheres are then released, and the pressure of hair on the core 6 distorts the device, forcing the cheeks 5 against each other, and the walls 11 of the grooves 3 against the wound hair. The material of the device permits volume compression of fifty per cent. or more on the initial volume under distortion.
