Abstract

1,145,999. Polymeric polysulphides. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. (E. A. Dudley). 26 Aug., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 37812/65. Heading C3R. Polymeric polysulphides of molecular weight less than 10,000 are obtained by reacting a polysulphide of a metal of Group IA of the Periodic Table with methylene dichloride the reaction mixture also containing as a chain-terminating agent an organic monohalide, whose organic radical is an alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical which also may contain another substituent which does not react with the metal polysulphide. The molar ratio of the methylene dichloride to the metal polysulphide is from 0À5:1 to 1À5:1, and the amount of the organic monohalide is from 1 to 25% by weight of the methylene dichloride and the metal polysulphide. There may also be present a polyhalide containing 3 or more halogen atoms in the molecule, to provide a cross-linked product, and the polyhalide may be present in an amount of from 2 to 25% by weight of the metal polysulphide. The reaction may be carried out in water or in an organic liquid and an anionic surface-active agent may be present. In examples polysulphides are prepared by reacting sodium tetrasulphide with mixtures containing methylene dichloride, benzyl chloride, allyl chloride, n-butyl chloride, ethyl α-bromoacetate and 1,2,3-trichloropropane.
