Abstract
1,145,881. Etching. C. C. COHN, and S: L. COHN, [trading as COLONIAL ALLOYS CO.]: 5 April, 1966 [28 June, 1965], No, 15205/66. Heading B6J. [Also in Division C7] An Al surface is brightened by treatment, suitably at 210‹ to 220‹ F., in a bath comprising, by weight, 40À0 to 64À6% phosphoric acid, 9À97 to 25À0% sulphuric acid, 1À5 to 4À0% nitric acid, 1À45 to 3À1% Al, 13-2 to 21À5% water and 0À0116 to 0À126% Cu, the ratio of phosphoric to sulphuric acid being 1À57:1 to 6À5:1, the total acids making up 50À0 to 89À6% of the mixture by weight and the specific gravity of the bath at 25‹ C. being 1À72 to 1À77. Preferably the bath comprises 42À5 to 48À0% phosphoric acid, 21À0 to 25À0% sulphuric acid, 3À0 to 3À6% nitric acid, 15À6 to 19À0% water, 1À6 to 2À7% Al and 0À0116 to 0À0126% Cu, the ratio of phosphoric to sulphuric acid being 1À57:1 to 2À07 :1, the total acids making up 63À4 to 73À0% of the mixture by weight and the specific gravity of the bath at 25‹ C. being 1À74 to 1À75. 1À0 to 1À5% by weight of ammonia salts may also be present: The bath may be replenished with a solution comprising by weight 35À2 to 46À40% phosphoric acid, 7À13 to 18À69% sulphuric acid, 12À01 to 13À193% nitric acid, 0À005 to 0À0053% Cu, 0À208 to 0À460% ammonia and 31À72 to 32À840% of water, with a specific gravity at 25‹ C. of 1À495 to 1À515.
