Abstract
1,143,793. Road vehicle braking system. GIRLING Ltd. 11 July, 1967 [21 July, 1966], No. 32808/66. Headings F2E and F2F. Relates to a road vehicle braking system incorporating hydraulically operated wheel brakes and a transmission brake which is operable hydraulically simultaneously with the wheel brakes and operable mechanically for parking. General arrangement.-As shown, Fig. 2, brakes are applied by hydraulic fluid under pressure supplied to wheel brake cylinders 15 and to slave cylinder(s) of a disc brake 31 on the transmission shaft from a master cylinder 16, the piston of which is actuated by a pressure booster 17. Air compressed by a pump 18 driven by vehicle engine 19 is delivered through a regulator 21 to a reservoir 22 in which pressure is maintained at a predetermined value. The reservoir supplies air under pressure through a pedal valve 22 to the booster 17. Alternatively the master cylinder may be tandem type, one pressure space supplying the wheel brake slave cylinders and the other the transmission brake cylinders. The transmission shaft brake can be applied mechanically by a hand lever 33. The application to an eight wheel, four axle vehicle (Fig. 3, not shown) is generally similar, except that in this case there is one master cylinder mounted at or on each axle, one of the four master cylinders also supplying hydraulic fluid under pressure to the transmission brake. Transmission brake.-As shown, Fig. 4, a disc 66 is bolted to flanges 67 on a sleeve 68 splined on a shaft 69 projecting from the vehicle gearbox and driven when the vehicle is in motion. The disc is cooled by air through radial or helical passages 75. Opposed pistons 77, 78 operate in an hydraulic cylinder 76 along an axis perpendicular to the disc plane. The piston 77 acts on a friction pad 79 on a backing plate 81. The piston 78 acts on a yoke 82 which extends across the plane of the disc and carries a friction pad 83 on plate 84. Hydraulic fluid urges the pistons apart to apply the brake. To operate the brake mechanically, a spindle 85 (Fig. 5) is rotatable, by a lever 87, in a projection of piston 78. A rocking dolly 88 is interposed between a recess in the spindle and a recess in a thrust member 91. When the spindle 85 is rotated the dolly moves thrust member 91, which abuts the piston 77 and pad 79 is thereby urged against the disc. Reaction force on the dolly moves the piston 78 and yoke 82 to apply pad 83.
