Abstract
1457512 Multi-disc brakes; actuating cylinders; transmission mechanism KIRKSTALL FORGE ENG Ltd 4 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 13018/73 Headings F2E and F2F A multi-disc brake assembly 15 for a pair of road wheels 12 consists of two sets of interleaved discs 16, 17 immersed in oil and splined respectively to an extension 18 of a rotatable wheel hub 13 and to a fixed member 19, a pair of opposed plates 20, 30 one of which 30 is an annular plate disposed adjacent the discs 16, 17, balls 31 disposed between the plates 20, 30 and accommodated in respective recesses in the plates 20, 30 having inclined surfaces (31), a cam 27, a cam shaft 26 rotatable to rotate the cam 27 to impart rotation to one of the plates 20, 30 and thereby to cause the balls 31 to move the plate 30 away from plate 20 to cause braking interengagement of the discs 16, 17. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-7 the cam shaft 26 which extends parallel to an axle tube 10 is fixed to an arm 25 connected to a piston rod 24 projecting from a spring brake chamber 23. During parking or emergency braking air line pressure applied to a hold-off cylinder is disconnected to cause spring brake application. Service braking is accomplished by actuation of a valve arranged to cut off the supply of air to the hold-off cylinder and apply air under pressure to a back up cylinder behind the spring. The rotatable plate of Figs. 1-7 is plate 30 which has a block 28 attached thereto by dowels 29 (Fig. 4), and the cam 27 bears on block 28 so that the plate 30 is rotated by cam 27 through block 28 to apply the brake assembly 15. In the embodiment of Figs. 8-10 a plate 120 is rotatable and annular plate 130 is movable axially but splined to member 19 to prevent rotation. The cam 27 is disposed in a cut-out 40 in a flange (41) on the plate 120, and causes rotation of the plate 120 to urge plate 130 axially. The plates 120, 130 are urged together by springs 42. The brake assembly may be operated by a hydraulic cylinder and an over-riding hand brake mechanism.
