Abstract

1,142,689. Laminated armour plating. AEROJET-GENERAL CORP. 29 March, 1966, No. 13831/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Division F3] A lightweight armour plate comprises a body or matrix 16 of non-metallic shatterresistant material having embedded therein a plurality of projectile fragmentation inducing and energy dissipating means 12 having a hardness of at least 400K 500 . The means 12 may be in the form of spheres, elongated cylinders (Fig. 2, not shown) or flat tiles of four or more sides (Figs. 3a, 3b, 4, not shown). The non-metallic shatter-resistant material may comprise a thermo-setting epoxy resin such as of the type disclosed in Specification 1,108,984, reinforced by glass-fibre. Layers 14 of metal or other hard substance or strong fabric may be provided. Also a woven material such as a plastics material impregnated fabric may be embedded in the matrix 16 passing alternately over and under the cylinders (Fig. 2, not shown) or may be placed at both sides of the layer of tiles (Fig. 3b, not shown). In the latter case the fabric may be of glass fibre. Further, in the construction of Fig. 3b, an elastomeric backing of, e.g. nitrile rubber, is provided for the inner fabric layer.
