Abstract

1,139,830. Tufting machines. E. T. BARWICK MILLS Inc. 18 July, 1966, No. 32257/66. Heading D1G. A tufting machine comprises means, located beneath the work support and adjacent the bath of a needle, for directing a jet of fluid towards a portion of the needle beneath the work support for causing movement of yarn through a passage in the needle. As shown, a needle 2 is formed with an eye 28 into which extends an axial groove 36. A compressed air chamber 30, located beneath the work support 19, has a downwardly-inclined passage 32 which directs a jet of air towards the needle for moving yarn Y along groove 36 and through eye 28 to form a tuft when the needle retracts. The tuft length is determined by feeding means comprising a pivoted arm (44) carrying a pair of idler feed rollers (42), one of which normally engages a fast drive roller (38) for producing long tufts. Arm (44) is raised by an energised solenoid (46) for engaging the roller (42) with a slow drive roller (40) to produce short tufts.
