Abstract

1,139,796. Brakes. BENCRAFT Ltd. 25 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 31386/65. Heading F2E. A manually-operable brake, particularly for invalid chairs, perambulators, or pushchairs comprises a first hand-actuated first lever and a second shorter lever, 11 and 13 respectively, connected by a rod 10 for rotation about a common axis, a link 19 pivoted at one end to the shorter second lever and forming a toggle linkage therewith, a substantially U-shaped guide bracket 22 pivoted to a fixed frame member 15 and to the other end of the link, said bracket carrying a part-cylindrical brake pad 26 on an extension thereof and guiding said brake pad for engagement with tyre 16 of a wheel 17. On rotation of the first lever in the direction of arrow A, the brake pad is moved into engagement with the wheel and is held in the applied position by the second lever and link moving past the dead-centre position, Fig. 2 (not shown). A stop tab 28 on the link determines the final relative positions of the link and second lever in the brake applied position. The brake pad is adjustably mounted on the guide bracket by screw-threaded rod 25 and nut 27 engaging with a bush 24. Alternatively the link 19 may be adjustable in length.
