Abstract
1,138,577. Utilizing energy of radiations. SANDERS NUCLEAR CORP. 14 Nov., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 51848/67. Heading G6P. An isotopic heat source is formed of a mixture of thulium 170 and thulium 171. The half power life of the source, i.e. the time required for the power to fall to half the initial power, is controlled by adjusting the ratio of thulium 171 to thulium 170. The 170 and 171 isotopes are produced from thulium 169 by irradiation in a nuclear reactor. The isotope ratio is adjusted by variation of the neutron flux level and the irradiation time. Thulium or thulium oxide, in powdered or sintered form, is employed as the target material and is enclosed in a tungsten shield.
