Abstract
1,065,784. Detecting neutrons. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. April 7, 1964, No. 14367/64. Heading G6P. [Also in Divisions G1 and H1] Neutron detectors.-A detector for slow or epithermal neutrons comprises a proportional counter 105, Fig. 12, surrounded by paraffin or other moderator 112 and a thermal neutron shield 111. An alternative detector comprises a scintillator in the form of lithium iodide slabs pasted about a core of paraffin moderator, the whole being encased in a thermal neutron shield. Neutron sources.-A source of high energy neutron pulses comprises an oscillator 38, Fig. 2 (not shown), producing a 2 kv. square wave which is applied between a housing 23 and a grid 39. This periodically ionises deuterium gas in the space between insulators 40,41. The deuterium ions are accelerated towards a target 43 containing tritium by a 200 kv. supply 42 where they react to form 14À4 Mev. neutron pulses.
