Abstract
1,137,964. Ethylene - vinyl chloride copolymers. TOYO KOATSU INDUSTRIES Inc. 16 March, 1966 [29 March, 1965], No. 11520/66. Heading C3P. Ethylene-vinyl chloride copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing ethylene, vinyl chloride and optionally an ethylenically unsaturated compound copolymerizable with ethylene and vinyl chloride and having the formula HXC= CYZ where X, Y and Z are hydrogen, or alkyl, halogen, carboxy, cycloalkyl, halogenated alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, aryl, vinyl, cyano, acyl, acyloxy, aryloxy, carboalkyloxy, carboaryloxy or carbamoyl radicals and at least one but not all of X, Y and Z is hydrogen, but excluding vinyl chloride, in the presence of 0À005 to 0À25% by weight based on the vinyl chloride content of a dialkyl peroxy dicarbonate having 3 or 4 carbon atoms in each alkyl group thereof, at a pressure of 20 to 70 kg/cm.<SP>2</SP> and at a temperature of 35‹ to 60‹ C., wherein the proportions of the monomers used are chosen so that the resultant copolymer comprises 4 to 24 mol. per cent of ethylene units, 76 to 96 mol. per cent of vinyl chloride units and 0 to 10 mol. per cent units of the ethylenically unsaturated compound. Suitable dialkyl peroxy dicarbonates are diisopropyl, di-(tert-butyl) and di- (sec-butyl) peroxy dicarbonates. Also used in the examples are: an aqueous solution of a vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride copolymer, benzoyl peroxide, borax, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium pyrophosphate, vinyl acetate and diethyl fumarate. The copolymers are compounded with an organo tin maleate, stearyl alcohol and methylene bis-stearamide.
