In a plate-type centrifuge for treating a mixture of two liquids containing solids, blocking of the entrance to the heavy liquid discharge channel formed between the casing 1 and a divided plate 7 by solids accumulating in the sludge space 9 is prevented by providing a conical insert 10 which screens off the entrance to the discharge channel from the sludge space and is provided with accelerator blades 11 on its upper side whereby an accelerating chamber is formed between the plate 7 and the insert 10 having an inlet 13 at approximately the same radial distance from the drum axis as the outer rim of the set of plates 8 and an outlet 12 at the outer edge of a radial flange on the insert 10. The inlet 13 and outlet 12 are provided by a number of apertures in the. insert 10. The insert 10 may be integral with the uppermost separator plate (L.H.S. of drawing), or independent therefrom (R.H.S.). In operation, the mixture is directed in the separating chamber by a divider base 14, the interface between the separated liquids being indicated at 15. The heavier liquid entering the accelerating chamber through the apertures 13 is brought up to the speed of the drum by the blades 11 and due to pressure in the chamber decreasing towards the apertures 12, the flow of the heavy liquid in the chamber is in this direction, part of the heavy liquid being returned into the sludge chamber through the apertures 12 which are thereby kept clear of solids, and the other part leaving the drum at 16 through the discharge channel. Any solids entrained between the parts 1, 7 and 7, 10 are redirected to the sludge chamber 9 through the apertures 12. Sludge may be discharged through orifices 3 which can be opened and closed by a hydraulic valve 4.
