Abstract

1,137,295. Free machining steel. CRUCIBLE STEEL CO. March 31, 1967, No. 14872/67. Heading C7A. A free machining stainless steel comprises: - Cr 14 - 20% Mn over 1À25 - 3% the balance apart from incidental constituents (e.g. N and P), being iron and has a Mn:S ratio of at least 3 and a Cr equivalent [(Cr + Si + 1À5Mo + 10A1 - Ni - Cu - 30(C+N)], of at least 14. A minor proportion of the sulphur may be replaced by one or more of Pb, Se and Te. The steel may be hot worked (e. g. at 982‹ - 1148‹C.) austenitized at 1010‹C., oil quenched, tempered at a temperature below the A 1 point but as near as possible thereto (e.g. 745‹C. ) and then air cooled.
