Abstract

1,137,284. Thermoplastic film bonded laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 May, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 26273/66. Heading B5N. A method of bonding together two solid objects comprises introducing a film of thermoplastic adhesive material in the solid or molten state between the surfaces to' be bonded, pressing together these surfaces while maintaining the adhesive material at an elevated temperature at which the said material is molten and allowing the adhesive material to solidify by cooling, the thermoplastic adhesive material being a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and an ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid in which the proportion of vinylidene chloride is between 10 and 90% of the said monomers. The copolymer may also contain a polymerized ethylenically unsaturated acid, e.g. acrylic or methacrylic acid. The film may be applied to one of the objects from a paper backing. Examples describe the bonding of wood to wood, of aluminium to aluminium, of polyvinyl chloride to aluminium, of two polyvinyl chloride coated fabrics and of rubber to rubber.
