Abstract
1,136,672. Epoxy resin compositions. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 10 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 1301/67. Heading C3B. [Also in Division B2] A coating composition comprises (a) from 30 to 80 parts by weight of a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric compound having an epoxide equivalent between 100 and 400; and (b) from 20 to 70 parts by weight of an epoxy ester of dimerized fatty acid or mixture of acids having an epoxide equivalent between 350 and 950; the composition is cured with from 10 to 30% based on the total weight of (a) and (b), of a non-volatile polyfunctional aromatic amine catalyst. The catalyst is blended with a mixture of the polyglycidyl ether and the epoxy ester, and the composition cured on the surface to which it is applied by heating, e.g. at 350 to 500 F. for 2 to 30 minutes. An accelerator may be used to accelerate the curing. Examples of polyglycidyl ethers, epoxy esters, catalysts and accelerators are given. The polyglycidyl ether may have an epoxide equivalent of 175 to 210, and the epoxy ester may have an epoxide equivalent of 390 to 470. The composition may contain equal parts of the polyglycidyl ether and the epoxy ester, and the amount of the catalyst is 20% of the total weight of the polyglycidyl ether and epoxy ester. The polyglycidyl ether may be polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric alcohol or phenol, e.g. bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- 2,2-propane, having an epoxide equivalent between 175 and 210 and a molecular weight between 350 and 400. The epoxy ester may be the ester of dimerized linoleic acid and a reaction product of epichlorohydrin and bis-(4- hydroxyphenyl)-2,2-propane. The catalyst may be meta-phenylene diamine or 4,41-methylene dianiline, or a mixture thereof; or an eutectic mixture of meta-phenylene diamine and 4,4<SP>1</SP>- methylene dianiline containing a minor amount of 1,2-epoxy-3-phenoxypropane.
