Abstract
1,136,445. Valves. AGA A.B. 14 Nov., 1966 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 50840/66. Heading F2V. [Also in Division A5] A valve device 38 which may be included in respiratory apparatus so as to divide a conduit into a first portion 5 and a second portion 5<SP>1</SP>, comprises a valve member 41 adapted to prevent gas flow from the portion 5 to the portion 5<SP>1</SP> unless gas pressure in the first portion exceeds that in the second portion by a certain amount, the valve device also including a supplementary valve member 44 to permit the reverse flow of gas through the device from the second portion to the first portion when the gas pressure in the second portion exceeds that in the first portion, there being means whereby one of the non- return valves 41, 44 can be permanently unseated. As shown, the valve device 38 is included in respiratory apparatus between a breathing bag 37, gas sources 11, 12, and a multi-way valve 51 arranged at 58 for connection to a breathing mask. The valve member 41 is biased by a compression spring 42 so that it only opens under a certain excess gas pressure and the valve member includes a spring loaded supplementary valve member 44 allowing reverse flow. The valve device includes a diaphragm 16 which may be moved by a knob 47 from the illustrated position in which valve members 41, 44 are both seated, to an inner position when the member 44 is held open to allow free flow of gas through the apparatus. The multi-way valve 51 includes valve members 53, 57 allowing exhalation via duct 56 to atmosphere, the valve member 53 also allowing inspiration through the conduit portion 5<SP>1</SP>. The supplementary valve member 44, by allowing reverse flow, is provided so that exhalation is not restricted by excess pressure in the conduit portion 5<SP>1</SP>. The apparatus may be used to supply anaesthetic gas or, by manual compression of the breathing bag 37, to administer artificial respiration.
