Abstract
1,135,611. Rotating couplings. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. 2 Feb., 1966 [9 Feb., 1965], No. 4575/66. Heading H2E. A rotating coupling comprises a contact drum 15 secured via plate 13 and member 12 to a rotating member 10, and a stationary housing 18 and 25 surrounding the drum, current being transferred from the housing to the drum by eight braid contacts 20 which lie in a spiral configuration around the periphery of the drum. Each braid contact is secured at one end to the housing 18 by a bolt 22 and at the other end to rings 23 and 24 which are rotatable around the axis of drum 15 under the action of springs 48 to tension the braid contacts. The tension of the springs 48 may be adjusted by a ring 43 which may be locked by nuts (56) (Fig. 3, not shown). Current is supplied to the housing 18 from heavy wire connections 47 clamped to plate 19 integral with housing 18. Water is used as a coolant and lubricant in the assembly and appropriate seals 37, 40, 40<SP>1</SP>, 41 and 42 are provided. The contact drum 15 is preferably made of aluminium bronze although either bronze or beryllium bronze may be used. The housing is preferably of brass and the braid contacts of copper which may be coated with silver.
