Abstract
1,134,466. Drawing glass coated glass fibres. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT GOBAIN. 18 Aug., 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 38113/67. Heading C1M. In the manufacture of optical fibres 15, comprising a glass core and a sheath of a different glass, by drawing the fibre through coaxial orifices 7a, 8a in the bottoms of two crucibles 7, 8 placed one within the other, the outer crucible 8 contains the sheath glass 10 and a rod 1 made of the core glass is introduced into the inner crucible 7 and the drawing speed, the temperature of the glass 10 and the length of the rod 1 extending into the inner crucible 7 are regulated so as to maintain only a low level of core glass in the bottom of the inner crucible. This reduces the time at which the core glass is kept at drawing temperature and prevents discoloration and devitrification. The crucible 8 is surrounded by electric heating means 9 and the rod 1 is heated by the molten glass 10. The rod 1 is secured to a bracket 2 movable vertically by a screwthreaded rod 3 rotated from shaft 4 by gear-wheels 5 and 6, the rate of lowering being adjusted according to the speed of the drawing rolls 14 and the temperatures used. The crucible 7 is mounted on an arm 11 fixed to a bracket 13 by an adjusting screw 12 so that the relative positions of the orifices 7a, 8a can be adjusted to control the thickness of the sheath. To avoid bubbles in the glass in the inner crucible, a platinum filament may be secured to the crucible so as to lie between the rod 1 and the level of the glass to guide the thread of glass from the rod. The orifice 7a may be tapered to extend into a tapered orifice 8a. The glass core may have the following composition in percentages by weight: SiO 2 14; B 2 O 3 17; BaO 48.5; La 2 O 3 10.5; ThO 2 10.
