Abstract
An optical fibre is drawn down out of a double crucible (12; 16) filled with a core glass (20) melt or a jacket glass (21) melt. A constant ratio of the core diameter to the jacket diameter is maintained during the drawing operation of the fibre by refilling the above mentioned melts with constant amounts (22, 23) of glass per unit of time. A state of equilibrium is established, in which the levels of the melts settle at a specific height. This dispenses with a detector for the melt level. <IMAGE>
