Abstract

1,132,984. Opening filamentary tow. COURTAULDS Ltd. 31 March, 1966 [1 April, 1965], No. 13810/65. Heading D1F. In a process for opening highly crimped cellulose acetate tow e.g. prior to its presentation to a cigarette filter-making machine, the tow 1 is withdrawn from a bale 2, through a guide ring 3, over a guide plate 5, through the nip between adjustably spaced rollers 4, at least one of which is driven and the upper of which presses onto the tow under its own weight and/or additional e.g. spring, loading. The disengaged tow passes over a guide plate 6, between which and a bar 8 or non-driven roller it hangs as a loop 7, passing through a spreader 9 which opens the tow into a band in which form it is removed by tensioning rollers 10, 11. The roller drive is operated by a variable speed motor (not shown) controlled e.g. by photo-cell observation of the loop, to maintain the loop length constant.
