Abstract

1,131,785. Automatic circuit breakers; snapaction switches. SQUARE D CO. 17 Feb., 1967 [5 April, 1966], No. 7582/67. Heading H1N. An overload responsive switch has a movable contact carrier 48 biased to the closed position and a lever 80 which on overload is released to engage the carrier 48 and move it to the open position, the lever 80 carrying a pawl 89 normally engaged with a ratchet wheel 96 to hold the lever 80 away from the carrier 48 and the pawl being provided with a projection 97 which bears against the surface of the wheel during resetting to guide the nose 95 of the pawl to the correct position on the wheel. The switch is provided with an operating handle 24 coupled by an overcentre tension spring. 37 to a lever 40 which can also engage the contact carrier 48 to move it to the open position. On overload a quantity of alloy melts permitting the ratchet wheel 96 to rotate allowing lever 80 to be moved by a spring 85 to open the contacts; to reset the mechanism handle 24 is first moved to the off position when a projection 29 thereon bears on the lever 80 turning it to bring the nose 95 of pawl 89 past the ratchet wheel so that the projection 97 then rests on the wheel. When the handle is then released the nose 95 drops back on to the wheel in the correct position.
