Abstract
1,131,143. X-ray coating thickness measurement. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. Dec. 9, 1965 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 51430/64. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions B2, G3, G6 and H5] An apparatus which determines the amount of an element(s) present in a material by X-ray absorption is characterized by the X-ray source comprising a #-particle-emitting radio-active source and gaseous target material which emits X-rays on bombardment with #-particles. The radio-active material or any decay product thereof must not emit y radiation or any internal conversion X-rays. The apparatus can be to control a coating device, e. g. coating polyvinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer on a cellulose film, so that any variation in the applied coating thickness detected by the elementdetermining apparatus causes a compensatory change in the rate of application of the coating on to the film to maintain the coating thickness constant. The peak radiation spectrum may correspond to the peak absorption spectrum of the X-ray absorbing element, e. g. chlorine in the above coating device. The X-ray detector may be a scintillation counter. The X-ray source may be a gaseous diffusion proof X-ray and #- particle impermeable container having an X-ray permeable window e. g. stainless steel with a beryllium window, in which the peak energy value of the #-particles emitted does not exceed 0À175 MeV. The radio-active material can be solid, e.g. Ni63 or S35, or gaseous, e.g. tritium. The target may be gaseous e.g. Ar or SO 2 , or a mixture of mutually unreactive gases. The target and radio-active material may be chemically combined, e.g. tritium-substituted HC1, HB 5 , SiH 4 , PH 3 , P 2 H 5 or H 2 S. Alternatively the radioactive material can be combined with an inactive material to form a gaseous compound, e. g. H 2 S S containing S-35 with S also as the target.
