A method of producing indole derivatives of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents hydrogen or a hydroxy-, lower alkyl-(C 1-4 or lower alkoxy-(C 1-4 ) group, and R<SP>2</SP> represents hydrogen or halogen, by a process characterized by subjecting 3,4-dihydrocarbostyrils of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are as defined above, to a rearrangement in the presence of a strong acid.
