Abstract
1,129,230. Polyvinyl alcohol. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. 1 Nov., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966], No. 49719/67. Heading C3P. Polyvinyl alcohol is prepared by saponifying poly(divinylcarbonate). By saponifying is meant alkaline or acid saponification or ester interchange. The polyvinyl alcohol may be isolated by (i) neutralizing the reaction mixture with concentrated hydrochloric acid; (ii) filtering the liquid from, suspended polymer and salts; (iii) dissolving the solid in water to give a solution; (iv) passing the solution through a mixed bed ion exchange column to remove all ions; and (v) precipitating pure polyvinyl alcohol by pouring the ion-free aqueous solution into excess acetone with agitation. The saponifying agent may be an alcohol, an alkali metal alkoxide or an acid e.g. sulphuric acid. In the examples sodium methoxide was used. In Example II poly(divinylcarbonate) is prepared as described in Specification 1,129,228.
