Abstract

An alkali salt of an aliphatic unsaturated carboxylic acid is prepared by oxidizing the halogenated hydrocarbon corresponding to the acid in an aqueous alkaline medium using cupric oxide or hydroxide in the presence of a noble metal and/or oxide or hydroxide as oxidizing agent. Examples describe the preparation of sodium acrylate from allyl chloride, and potassium methacrylate from methallyl chloride. The preferred noble metal is silver.
