An apparatus for measuring the mass flow-rate of a gas in a pipe comprises a main flow pipe 1, 2, an orifice 11 or other constriction of variable characteristics in the path of flow, connections 3, 4 for measuring the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream sides of the constriction, and a piston and cylinder device 17,18 for automatically adjusting the characteristics of the constriction according to the variations in density of the gas. The orifice is formed by a sleeve 8 with openings 12 surrounding an extension 9 of the flow pipe 2, the flow pipe having a wall 10. The extension 9 also has openings 11 which are adapted to correspond in varying amounts with the openings 12. The density sensitive device comprises an annular piston 18 slidable in a cylinder 17, the longitudinal movements of the piston being converted to rotation by a stud and slot arrangement 20, 21 to cause rotation of the sleeve 8 and thus variations in the orifice. A further adjustment sleeve 30 is also provided to cover the openings 12 in varying degrees to adjust the operable range of pressure differences.
