Abstract

1,128,003. Inspecting tobacco rod by radiation. HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO. K.G. Jan.21, 1966 [March 6, 1965; Nov.9, 1965], No.2845/66. Heading G1A. [Also in Division A2] Apparatus for measuring the tobacco content of a cigar or cigarette rod comprises a source directing radiation through substantially the whole cross-section of the rod in intersecting directions to a single measuring device and a screen to prevent direct radiation of the measuring device by the source. The rod 50 Fig. 2 to be tested is passed through a thin walled tube 51 and irradiated by a Sr<SP>90</SP> beta-ray source 55. The radiation passing through the rod is received by a gas filled ionisation chamber 59, direct radiation from the source being stopped by the screen 52. The source may be on a cylindrical surface coaxial with the rod, Fig.4 (not shown) and may comprise two spaced sources Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification, Fig.7, the source 72, screen 73 and ionisation chamber 79 surround the rod.
