Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1 and B5] In a screw extrusion machine, wet paper pulp with or without binders such as cement, gypsum or synthetic resin has most of its water content removed in a compression zone 1, is forced through a perforated plate 4 to be further dehumidified in a zone 2 and is extruded in sheet or tube form through a nozzle 8. Casing 5 is provided with drain apertures 6 interconnected by an outlet conduit 7. Preferably plate 4 is perforated at its upper portion only. The pulp is fed to the screw via a perforated plate 9 through which the pulp is forced by scrapers 10. These, together with projections 11, are rotated via a shaft 15. Projections 11 co-operate with stationary choppers 12 on blades 13 to perform a preliminary comminution. In a modification, projections 11 and scrapers 10 may be held stationary, components 9, 12, 13 and casing 16 being rotated. To aid comminution fluid may be admitted via a pipe 18 and binders may be added via a further pipe (not shown). A jacket around casings 5 and 16 provides a heating chamber 19.
