Abstract
1,127,148. Magnesia refractory. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. 22 Aug., 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 37619/66. Heading C1J. A refractory composition comprises (a) magnesia particles containing at least 97À5% MgO, 0À1 to 0À25% Cr 2 O 3 , and not more than 0À5% Fe 2 O 3 plus Al 2 O 3 , (b) 0À1 to 0À2% of finely divided silica, substantially all of which passes 100 mesh and a major proportion of which passes 325 mesh, and (c) an amount of a calcium compound forming CaO upon firing sufficient to provide a CaO : SiO 2 ratio of 1À75 : 1 to 2À6 : 1. The magnesia particles may be in brickmaking size ranges and a minor proportion of the particles pass 100 mesh. The silica may be pumicite or volatilized silica. The composition may be mixed with a tempering amount of water and with 1 to 3% of a chemical bonding agent, particularly 0À5-1À25% of at least one alkali metal, ammonium, or alkaline earth metal polyphosphate, forming the mixture into shape and firing it at a temperature of at least 1650‹ C. The refractory shape may be impregnated with tar and used in a furnace lining.
