Abstract
1,125,719. Refrigerating. MAX. PLANCKGESELLSCHAPT ZUR FORDERUNG DER WISSENSCHAFTEN, e.V. 24 Jan., 1966 [22 Jan., 1965], No. 3195/66. Heading F4H. In a device for cooling a coil 1 of superconducting material, the coil is placed in a container 3 which is evacuated through a connection 9, gaseous helium is supplied to the container 3 from a bottle 6, and a vacuum pump 28 draws liquid helium from a reservoir 22 into a coil 2 in the container 3, in which coil helium is vaporized. The temperature in the container 3 is controlled by a valve 26 which is automatically operated through a line 14 in accordance with temperature or vapour pressure in the container 3. The coil 2 is bifilar and gas from its outlet passes through a bifilar coil 16 forming a radiation shield before passing to the pump 28. The pump 28 discharges to a helium recovery plant (not shown). An adjustable device 5 maintains a constant helium pressure in the container 3 and, if the required conditions are such that helium liquefies in the container, a resistance feeler 12 is used to sense the liquid level in the container so that the helium supply may be discontinued. Superinsulation 18 is provided around the container 3 and an outer casing 19 may be evacuated through a connection 20. The device may be precooled with nitrogen.
