Abstract
An automobile electric contact for use in distributers and contact breakers for internal combustion engines includes a sintered body formed from tungsten carbide mixed with from 6 to 35% by weight of powdered elemental cobalt. The contact may also contain iron, nickel, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, chromium carbide, molybdenum carbide, tin or chromium specified percentages. The contact may be plated with nickel where it is to be soldered to a support block. A method for making the contact comprises the steps of mixing the powdered cobalt with powdered tungsten carbide; reducing the powder mixture, mixing a binder with the powder mixture to form it into granules, compressing the granules to mould into a moulded body, and firing to sinter the moulded body in a reducing atmosphere.
