Abstract
1,123,393. Ship stabilizers. MUIRHEAD & CO. Ltd. 23 Jan., 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 12580/66. Heading B7M. An active-tank type of stabilizer for a ship 1, or other buoyant body, includes a pair of tanks 2, 3 situated on either side of the ship and connected to each other by a channel system 4 containing a partition with a central opening therein in which an impeller 5 is lodged, the flow of liquid from one tank to the other being regulated by valves 7-10 such that the liquid always flows upwardly through said opening, and, to minimize the energy expended by the impeller, the natural frequency of the stabilizer being made equal to the highest frequency of the ship's oscillatory motion that is likely to occur when the ship is rolling. The stabilizer may be rendered of the passive-tank type by disconnecting an electric driving-motor 6 for the impeller from its source of energy, closing either the valves 7, 9 or the valves 8, 10 and opening the other two valves.
