[Also in Division G3] The amount of a treating substance on a web is controlled by passing the web between a first radio-active source and ionization chamber before treating and between a second radio-active source and ionization chamber after treating, measuring the difference between the outputs of the first and second ionization chambers and adjusting the pressure on squeeze rollers in accordance with the measured difference. A textile web F, Fig. 4, which is subjected to washing in a tank 15 and squeezing in rollers 17 has its water content measured by the measuring, the difference in output of ionization chambers 5, 5<SP>1</SP> receiving radiation from similar radio-active sources 1, 1<SP>1</SP> through the web before and after washing and squeezing. The apparatus of Fig. 4 is duplicated across the width of the web, Fig. 5 (not shown) and the measured values are used to control hydraulic forces applied to the ends of roller 17<SP>1</SP> to make the water content uniform across the width of the web.
