Abstract

Stable aqueous polytetrafluoroethylene emulsions are prepared by polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene in a buffered aqueous medium at a pH of not less than 7 in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal or ammonium persulphate and silver nitrate and in the presence of a dispersing agent comprising an ammonium or alkali metal salt of a perfluoro-octanoic acid and a stabilizing agent comprising a chlorofluorinated paraffin having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, in which the number of chlorine atoms is at least 3 in the case in which there is one or no hydrogen atom in the molecule, or is from 1 to 4 when there are 2 or more hydrogen atoms in the molecule. In examples there are used: borax, ammonium perfluoro-octanoate, trifluorotrichloroethane, ammonium persulphate, silver nitrate, CF2Cl.CFCl2, CF3CH2Cl, CFCl3, CF3CCl3 and CFCl2CF2CFCl2.
