Abstract

1,121,339. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. VERPACKUNGS-UNG SCHOKOLADENMASCHINEN DRESDEN VEB. 11 April, 1967, No. 16447/67. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] A device for simultaneously welding and severing thermoplastic film webs 3, 4 in a packaging machine comprises two jaws 1, 2 to clamp the webs therebetween and a heated welding and severing element 5 arranged on one side of the jaw 2, the jaw 1 including two spring-loaded clamping bars 6, 7 between which there is situated a slotted bar 11 which is spanned by a fork-shaped drawing blade 12 which in its working position engages depressions 14, 15 in the jaw 2. The bar 11 is cooled by a plurality of air in-flow passages communicating with a chamber connected to a suction conduit, Fig. 4 (not shown). In use, the webs 3, 4 are clamped between the jaws 1, 2 and pressed by the bars 6, 7, 11 against the jaw 2. The element 5 moves into the position of Fig. 1 to seal and sever the webs 3, 4 and then moves immediately back to its initial position. The jaw 1 recedes slightly so that the bar 11 releases the webs 3, 4 but the bars 6, 7, under the action of compression springs 8, 9, continue to clamp the webs 3, 4. The blade 12 moves forward and presses the webs 3, 4 into the depressions 14, 15, Fig. 2 (not shown). The jaw 1 is then moved against the jaw 2 again so that the cooled bar 11 cools the welded seams and the blade 12 is retracted, Fig. 3 (not shown). Thereafter, the jaws 1, 2 are separated.
