Abstract
A process for the manufacture of a vinyl ester from ethylene, molecular oxygen and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a Cu and/or Pd catalyst is characterized in that the catalyst is prepared by impregnating a carrier with a solution of a salt or salts of copper and/or palladium of which the anions are derived from an acid or acids having dissociation constants of less than 1 x 10-3, and reducing the salt(s) to the metal(s). The invention is directed particularly to the manufacture of vinyl acetate at about 100 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure over Pd and Cu on carbon as a catalyst.ALSO:A carrier, e.g. active charcoal is impregnated with a salt of a metal, e.g. Pt and/or Cu the anion of which is derived from an acid having a dissociation constant of less than 1 x 10-3 and thereafter the salt is reduced to the corresponding metal, e.g. with hydrogen at 250 DEG C.
