Abstract

1,118,835. Bowden mechanisms. MORSE INSTRUMENT CO. 28 Sept., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 43268/66 Heading F2K. [Also in Division B8] A motion transmitting mechanism, e.g. for ship steering gear, includes balanced first and second cable strands 14A, 14B wound round driving and driven drums 10, 15, at least one of which comprises two sections 35, 42 movable axially one relative to the other between a lockable position in which the sections are drivingly connected by interengaging axial teeth 43, 44 and a position in which they are spaced apart and can be rotated one relative to the other to adjust the cable tensions. Bolts 39 secure the ends of cable strands 14B, 14A to the drum sections 35, 42 respectively and they are wrapped therearound several times in opposite directions before extending together through a conduit system 11 having entry and exit pulleys 19 and guide pulleys at each corner 25. At the other end of the conduit system the strands are wrapped in opposite directions round the drum 15 and are secured thereto and/or joined together inside the drum. The drum section 35 is secured to an input shaft 12 upon which the section 42 is rotatably supported. A nut 48 threaded on the shaft end holds the sections together so that the teeth 43, 44 interengage. If the nut is released to a stop 64 the sections may be moved apart and relatively rotated to tension the cable, the section 42 having a serrated hand grip 52 and a hexagonal end boss 53 for a spanner. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the drum section (135) is also freely rotatable on the shaft (112) and has a second set of axial teeth (163) engageable with teeth (162) of a collar (160) secured to the shaft (112).
