Abstract
A sulphuric acid solution of nitrosyl-sulphuric acid is produced by reacting preferably at -15 DEG to + 70 DEG C., in stoichiometric quantities, sulphurous anhydride with nitric acid, the reaction being conducted in a medium of sulphuric acid and in the presence of nitrosyl sulphuric acid and water as initiators, the initial quantity of water being such that the weight of sulphuric acid with respect to the sum of the weights of sulphuric acid and water comprises 70-97 per cent. The initiator nitrosyl sulphuric acid may be formed in situ by the addition of NO2, a mixture of NO2 and NO or a mixture of NO and molecular oxygen to a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids. Alternatively the initiator may be formed by the addition to a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids, mineral salts or organic esters of nitrous acid or sulphurous anhydride in the presence of air. In place of mixing sulphuric and nitric acids, a mixture containing the reaction components: sulphuric acid, nitric acid, water and nitrosyl sulphuric acid, may be obtained by the action of nitrogen peroxide on excess sulphuric acid.
