Abstract
1,2-Dichloroethane is produced by reacting ethylene with hydrogen chloride and oxygen at a temperature of 260 DEG to 280 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst and a steam - hydrogen chloride mixture as diluent. The reaction products may be quenched by a counter-current flow of cold 1,2-dichloroethane and the aqueous phase which separates out may be recycled. Specified catalysts are metal halides, e.g. cupric chloride, optionally supported on clays or refractory oxides or hydroxides of aluminium.
