Abstract

Acetylene and ethylene are produced as by-products in the preparation of vinyl chloride by reacting at 500 DEG to 750 DEG C. a mixture of ethane, available chlorine and oxygen in the presence of added water and an oxidation catalyst (see Division C2C). The acetylene may be selectively hydrogenated to ethylene or may be absorbed with cuprous ammonium hydroxide. Ethylene may be obtained by cooling the reaction product, scrubbing the remaining gas with alkaline solutions, compressing the resultant gas and scrubbing the same with solvents for chlorinated hydrocarbons.ALSO:Vinyl chloride is prepared by reacting at 500 DEG to 750 DEG C. a mixture of ethane, available chlorine and oxygen in the presence of added water and an oxidation catalyst; at least one gm. atom of said available chlorine being added per mole of ethane and per mole of oxygen and at least two moles of said water being added per mole of ethane. The available chlorine may be HCl, Cl2, ethylene dichloride or mixtures thereof. Preferred catalysts, which may be supported on a carrier, are the inorganic oxygen-containing compounds of multivalent metals, especially Fe, Ce, Mn, U, V, Ni, Cr and Co, to which promoters, e.g. inorganic compounds of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, B, In, P and Tl, can be added. Ethyl chloride produced as by-product may be recycled to the process for conversion to vinyl chloride and ethylene also produced as by-product may be converted into ethyl chloride or ethylene dichloride for recycle to the vinyl chloride reaction. Methyl chloride is a further by-product of the reaction.
