Abstract

1,116,448. Attaching mouthpieces to cigarettes or cigars. A. SCHERMUND. 20 Oct., 1965 [21 Oct., 1964], No. 44378/65. Heading A2C. A method for attaching mouthpieces to the cigarettes or cigars comprises conveying on a drum groups consisting of two cigarettes or cigar lengths and an interposed double length filter to which a connector strip has been applied and rolling the assembly between two opposed moving surfaces both moving in the same direction <s, but at, different speeds from, the drum. The groups 36 and connector strips are conveyed between freely rotatable members 3 mounted adjacent bars 4 on the conveyer drum which rotates anti-clockwise. The drum is provided with a stationary segment 8 over which runs a belt 11 which is driven in the direction of the arrow but at a slower speed than the drum so that the groups are rotated anti-clockwise and the trailing edge 38 of the connector strip wrapped around the group. The leading edge of the strip, 37a, is tensioned by contact with suction orifices 42, 43 and 44 in a suction block 34. Beyond the block 34 rolling of the groups is completed between the belt 11 and further belts 21 which travel at a speed in excess of that of the conveyer drum. The speed at which the groups are rotated is arranged to be not more than 2¢ revolutions per second. The rolled groups are ultimately transferred to a further drum on which they are cut into two single length filter cigarettes.
