Abstract

1,115,574. Power transmission systems. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 9 March, 1967 [18 March 1966; 11 Nov., 1966]. Nos. 12175/66 and 50711/66. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions Fl and F2] In a vehicle transmission system an engine not shown located adjacent a final drive unit 10 drives change speed gearing 22 via a clutch 12 and the drive from the gearing is via transfer gearing 34, located in space between the clutch and gearing 22, to a bevelgear 42 which drives the unit 10. The whole system is within a casing 46. The main and lay shafts 28 and 20 of the gearing 22 are parallel and the gearing is of the constant mesh type including double ended synchromesh or dog-tooth clutches 30 and a reverse idler gear 32. The output from the gearing 22 is via the main shaft 28 and the transfer gearing 34 includes bevel gears 36, 38. The gearing 34 may alternatively be by chain or toothed belt. In other embodiments the output from gearing 22 may be by the lay shaft 20 and the gearing 34 comprise straight cut gears. In the further embodiment of Fig. 6, an interaxle differential 78 is located between the gearing 34 and final drive unit 10, a second final drive shaft 100 being adapted to drive a second final drive unit. The second final drive unit may be located at either end of the system and the differential may alternatively be located on the side of unit 10 remote from the clutch. The differential 78 may include either bevel or planetary gears.
