Abstract

Copolymers of 60 to 99 weight per cent of ethylene and 40 to 1 weight per cent of acrylic acid may be chlorinated by dissolving in an inert liquid solvent to form a solution containing 1 to 25 weight per cent of copolymer, passing chlorine gas through the solution at a rate of 0.05 to 1 lb. per hour per lb. of copolymer, preferably while irradiating with actinic light. The chlorination may be effected batchwise or continuously, to give products containing 1 to 40 weight per cent of chlorine. The products may be dissolved in organic solvents such as methyl isobutyl ketone and used for coating or bonding aluminium, paper or steel.ALSO:Substrates such as aluminium, paper, and steel may be coated with chlorinated copolymers of ethylene and 1 to 40 weight per cent of acrylic acid, said chlorinated copolymer containing 1 to 40 weight per cent of chlorine. The chlorinated copolymer may be applied by brushing or dipping from a 1 to 30 weight per cent solution in methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone, toluene or ethylene dichloride.
