In drying textile material the material is held to air-permeable conveying means in a folded condition by a pressure difference in a drying medium, during a part of the process and is held to air-permeable conveying means in the same way but in a differently folded condition or in a stretched condition during another part of the process. The conveying means are preferably sieve drum type dryers and the material may be laid on the drum in folds parallel to or radial to the drum axis. The material can be lifted from an initial folded condition on a sieve drum and re-laid in a differently folded condition on to the same or a further drum or it may be laid on to a succeeding drum which is rotating at a faster speed than the initial drum so that the material is in a stretched condition. The speeds of the drums may be correlated to produce an ironing as well as a drying effect. Also the material may be taken from the output end of the device and re-introduced into the input end to repeat the treatment thereof. Known drying apparatus of the type for drying loose fibrous material and having opening means may be used, by providing folding means in parallel with the opener and passing the material through the folding means and by-passing the opener. The process is particularly applicable to drying tow, sliver, top or the like and several may be laid in side-by-side relationship on a common drum or drums.
