Abstract
<PICT:1110048/C6-C7/1> In an electrolytic cell the spacing between the anode and cathode electrodes is automatically adjusted in accordance with changes in the electrical and/or chemical parameters of the cell, the driving units for the movable electrodes being actuated by pressurized fluid under the control of a regulating valve. The driving units may be of the type including a diaphragm or an 'O' ring which is acted upon by the fluid Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). A valve for regulating the supply of fluid, such as compressed air, to the driving units in response to cell conditions may comprise a pivoted member 25 which is biased by a spring 26 and which is acted upon by a magnetic core 23 having a winding 24 to which the cell voltage is applied; movement of the member 25 allows more or less air to discharge from a nozzle 27, whereby the fluid pressure applied to the driving units by way of line 29 is varied in response to electrical changes in the cell. The cell may be of the type having a mercury or mercury amalgam cathode and a graphite or metal anode.
