In a flushing cistern comprising a syphon 1 having an intake leg 3 ending in a cylinder 4 containing a plunger 5 raised to start discharge by a rod 6 passing through an aperture 7 in the cylinder top and carrying a grommet 12 to seal it at that time, so that if the plunger 5 is raised and immediately released, a partial flush occurs, whereas if the plunger 5 is held raised, a full flush occurs, the aperture 7 is of larger cross-sectional area than the rod 6, and the effective air inlet is provided by one or more apertures 10 in the wall of a body 9 of an inverted cup or box form over the aperture 7.
