Abstract
1109674 Transistor amplifying circuits MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO 4 May 1965 [4 May 1964] 18785/65 Index H4R 18AX A drift stabilized D.C. amplifier comprises means for setting the input from time to time to a level at which the output provides an error signal representing the amplifier drift, a solion cell responsive to the error signal to provide a compensating signal dependent thereon, and a feedback path to the amplifier for applying the compensating signal continuously thereto, the signal source being such as to provide a constant compensating signal during the intervals between the times at which the input is set to said level, regardless of the duration of those intervals. The embodiment comprises an arrangement for amplifying a plurality of different signals which are supplied to terminals 12, 14 and applied to the input of the amplifier 16, Fig. 1, in sequence by means of reed switches 34. Amplifier 16 is of the differential type, the two inputs being applied via series resistors 56, 58 and the input terminal 52 earthed over resistor 58a: negative feedback is applied over resistor 60. Amplifier 16 feeds via series resistor 66 a further amplifier 18 the output of which is supplied to output terminals 20, negative feedback being applied over the amplifier by resistor 70: the gain is adjusted independently for each input by means of further feedback resistors 72 each of which is brought into parallel connection with resistor 70 by means of reed switches 74 which operate in synchronism with the corresponding reed switch 34 by means of control circuit 48. The operating sequence of control circuit 48 includes a position in which reed switches 82 are closed: the input to amplifier 16 is then short-circuited to earth, and the output of amplifier 18 comprises the drift error. This is fed back via reed switch 88, which is closed simultaneously, to a compensating signal generator 87 which feeds a compensating signal into the input of amplifier 18. The compensating signal generator 87 comprises a low-pass filter 109, 113, Fig. 2, feeding the error signal to the control electrode 102 of a solion cell 96: reversely-connected diodes 115 prevent the application of an excessive signal to the solion cell. The output_from output electrode 114 is fed to the emitter of a common base-connected transistor amplifier 116 which is followed by further direct-coupled amplifying stages 130, 132: transistor 114 is connected in series in the collector circuit of transistor 132, so that the output which is fed back to amplifier 18 varies about ground potential.
