Abstract

A lathering, emolient, skin-cleansing composition contains by weight of the composition, 8 to 24% water-soluble anionic synthetic detergent, at least 3% liquid water-insoluble fatty acid ester and water. Specified anionic synthetic detergents are the salts of higher acyl esters of isethionic acid, lauryl ether sulphates, sulphated polyethoxy higher alkyl mono-esters of succinic acid, and mono-esters formed between higher acyl polyethoxy derivatives and one of the carboxyl groups of sulphosuccinic acid, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, sodium secondary alkyl sulphates, and the sodium salts of acyl derivatives of taurine or methyl taurine. Specified fatty acid esters include isopropyl myristate, methyl laurate, isopropyl stearate, isopropyl linoleate and stearyl oleate. The composition may be in the form of a cream, lotion, paste or milk and may also contain a fatty acid solid at body temperature or another fatty or waxy substance with a melting point above 40 DEG C., cetyl alcohol, a thickener, e.g. methyl cellulose, a non-ionic emulsifying agent and/or a lower alcohol. Small amounts of ingredients customarily present in toilet soap bars, e.g. preservatives, antioxidants, perfumes, electrolytes, germicides and sequestrants for heavy metal ions found in the raw materials for the compositions, may also be present. Compositions containing the synthetic detergent at the lower specified limit may also contain a lather improver, e.g. lauric diethanolamide, high monofatty glycerides or fatty ureides. The pH of the composition may be adjusted by the addition of an alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide. The composition may be made by heating a mixture of fatty ingredients to 60-80 DEG C., heating a mixture of non-fatty ingredients to 60-80 DEG C., mixing together the heated mixtures with agitation and cooling.
